What’s Happening for Houston Veterans This Week (June 15-21)
Happy Monday, Civvie!
This week kicks off with Military Monday Happy Hour, giving veterans another opportunity to relax, reconnect, and enjoy some camaraderie. The rest of the week is a bit lighter, but there’s plenty happening as we move on through June.
The action really picks up at the end of the month. Be sure to register for The Civvie Connect on June 24, as we bring our monthly meetup to Katy for the first time. Whether you're a longtime supporter or joining us for the first time, we’d love to see you there.
The following day, veterans can connect with employers at the Houston Veteran Job Fair or help launch something new at the first official Houston event for Veterans Beer Club. Then we close out the month with the America 250 Celebration, bringing patriots together for an evening of community, conversation, and support for the Whiskey Valor Foundation.
This week’s spotlight features a Marine veteran whose journey from professional athlete to biotech leader and community builder led him to Houston and the launch of Veterans Beer Club. His story is a reminder that purpose after service often starts with something simple: bringing people together.

🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT
Finding Purpose Through Service Again
For Kenneth Rienecker, service has never been about following a traditional path.
His journey has taken him from the streets of Queens, New York, to Division I athletics, professional volleyball in Europe, the United States Marine Corps, cancer research laboratories, biotechnology leadership roles, and now, the Houston veteran community. Throughout each chapter, one theme has remained constant: a desire to serve others.
Kenny grew up in a family with a long history of military service. While college was encouraged first, the military remained an important goal from an early age. Athletics provided an opportunity to pursue higher education, earning a volleyball scholarship to Rutgers University, where he studied biology while competing at the Division I level. After graduation, he signed a professional volleyball contract and spent a season competing in Madrid, Spain.
An injury eventually ended his professional playing career and forced an unexpected return home. With limited opportunities available and a desire to serve, Kenny pursued a commission in the Marine Corps. After repeated attempts to enter through the officer route, he ultimately chose to enlist instead.
In 2012, he entered Marine Corps boot camp and graduated as the Honor Graduate of his class. He later joined 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines in California as an infantry Marine.
Like many veterans, however, Kenneth's military experience was only part of the story.
A series of shoulder injuries ultimately led to medical retirement and forced another difficult transition. Suddenly, the path he had envisioned for himself no longer existed. Despite holding a biology degree and later earning a master's degree in biomedical science, the adjustment to civilian life proved challenging.
Kenny speaks openly about the struggles he faced after leaving the military. The loss of identity, anger, isolation, and difficulty reconnecting with civilian life created obstacles that affected nearly every area of his life. Over time, through personal growth, family, and a commitment to rebuilding himself, he found a new direction and a new perspective on what service could look like after the military.
That next chapter led him into biotechnology and medical research. His work included developing gene therapy technologies designed to target cancer cells, contributing to research programs focused on some of healthcare's most complex challenges.
He later earned an MBA and moved into leadership roles within the biotechnology industry, working for organizations ranging from startups to global companies. Along the way, he developed expertise spanning science, product management, commercialization, artificial intelligence, and entrepreneurship.
Yet despite earning multiple advanced degrees and building an impressive professional background, Kenny encountered another challenge that many veterans know all too well.
Finding the next opportunity.
After submitting thousands of applications and navigating one of the toughest job markets in recent memory, he experienced firsthand the frustration many veterans face when trying to translate their skills and experiences into civilian opportunities. Rather than allowing that experience to isolate him, it reinforced his commitment to helping others avoid the same struggles.
That commitment is what ultimately brought him to Houston.
After relocating earlier this year, Kenny immediately began looking for ways to plug into the local veteran community. Through organizations, events, and introductions from other veteran leaders, he quickly discovered what many already know about Houston: there is an incredible network of people dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.
Today, much of his focus is centered on helping strengthen those connections.
One of the ways he is doing that is through the launch of the Houston Chapter of Veterans Beer Club. Originally founded in San Diego, Veterans Beer Club creates informal opportunities for veterans to gather, build relationships, and connect with resources throughout the community. The concept is simple but powerful: bring veterans together in a relaxed environment where conversations happen naturally and new relationships can form.
For Kenny, the mission goes beyond organizing events.
He sees Veterans Beer Club as another bridge connecting veterans to the people, organizations, and resources already working to support them. Whether someone is looking for career guidance, community, mentorship, housing resources, or simply a conversation with someone who understands their experience, he believes no veteran should have to navigate those challenges alone.
His vision aligns closely with what makes Houston's veteran community unique. Rather than competing for attention, organizations are increasingly working together to create pathways that help veterans find the support they need.
As Kenny puts it, veterans have always been family.
His goal is to spend the next chapter of his life helping that family stay connected.
