What’s Happening for Houston Veterans This Week (Apr 06 - Apr 12)
Happy Monday, Civvie!
Coming off Easter weekend, we hope you had a chance to slow down, spend time with family, and recharge. As we head into the week, things are picking up quickly across the Houston veteran community.
This week and next continue to build momentum with a mix of networking events, entrepreneurship programs, and opportunities to connect across Houston, all leading into Fleet Week and a packed lineup of community-driven events.
Valor & Victory Fest is shaping up to be something special. We already have 120+ veterans and supporters from the community attending, along with 50–100 active-duty service members joining us.
This is more than just an event. It’s a chance to bring the entire community together in one place. If you’re planning to come, now’s the time to lock in your ticket. And if you can’t make it, you can still be part of it by sponsoring a complimentary ticket for an active-duty service member working Fleet Week.
In this week’s spotlight, we highlight the work being done to support veterans facing some of the toughest transitions, with a focus on creating structure, stability, and a real path forward for those in crisis. A powerful reminder of the impact happening behind the scenes in our community.

🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT
Supporting Veterans Through Their Hardest Transitions. A Mission Focused on Veterans in Crisis
For many veterans, the transition from military to civilian life is not a clearly defined event, but an extended process that can present significant challenges. While some leave service with a structured plan and support system, others encounter barriers that can quickly lead to instability. Housing insecurity, unemployment, and limited awareness of available benefits are among the most common factors that contribute to this outcome.
In these moments, early intervention can make a measurable difference.
Douglas Marcaccio, a Navy veteran, brought forward the structure, discipline, and accountability developed during his military service into a role focused on supporting veterans facing housing instability with The Warrior's Refuge. Based in West Columbia, Texas, he serves as a driving supervisor within a program dedicated to assisting homeless veterans as they begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
Although the position is formally centered on transportation, its practical impact is broader. He is frequently responsible for facilitating a veteran’s initial transition from an unstable environment into a structured program. This often includes coordinating pickups from VA facilities, shelters, or temporary living situations and ensuring safe placement within a system designed to support stabilization and long-term progress.
This initial step is a critical inflection point.
For many veterans, it represents the transition from uncertainty to structure, and from isolation into a support system equipped to address both immediate and long-term needs. The program emphasizes progression rather than temporary relief, focusing on outcomes that enable veterans to regain independence.
Through initiatives such as Warrior Empowerment, participants are guided through a process of identifying and pursuing next steps. These may include securing employment, enrolling in educational programs, or reestablishing the routines and accountability that are often disrupted during periods of instability. The objective is not only to provide support, but to create a sustainable path forward.
A consistent challenge within this population is the underutilization of benefits. Many veterans are either unaware of the resources available to them or face difficulty navigating the systems required to access them. Programs such as vocational rehabilitation and employment services remain underused, despite their potential to significantly improve long-term outcomes.
Drawing from his own experience in the military, he is able to help bridge this gap. By connecting veterans with the appropriate resources and reinforcing a structured approach to transition, he contributes to improving access, increasing awareness, and supporting forward movement. Each step is intended to build momentum, enabling veterans to regain control of their circumstances and establish a foundation for long-term success.
Efforts of this nature often operate with limited visibility, yet they address a critical need within the veteran community. By focusing on those experiencing the most acute challenges, they provide a pathway forward for individuals who might otherwise remain disconnected from the support systems available to them.
For those in the Houston area seeking to support, collaborate, or learn more about initiatives focused on veterans in crisis, this work represents a meaningful opportunity to engage with an issue of ongoing importance.
