What’s Happening for Houston Veterans This Week (Mar 30 - Apr 05)
Happy Monday, Civvie!
Momentum is building across the Houston veteran community as we roll into April. This week brings a mix of connection and opportunity, from golf tournaments supporting veteran wellness to networking mixers and entrepreneurship programs designed to help you grow and stay plugged in.
And it doesn’t slow down. The next couple of weeks are packed with events across business, education, and community, all leading into Fleet Week Houston and a full lineup of experiences bringing veterans, active-duty, and supporters together across the city.
In this week’s spotlight, we highlight the work being done behind the scenes to strengthen the veteran ecosystem through connection, partnerships, and action. A powerful reminder that real impact starts with getting in the room and building relationships.
👇 And right below this, you’ll see a photo from last week’s The Civvie Connect. Veterans and supporters coming together, reconnecting, and building the kind of community that makes all of this possible.

🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT
Where Connection Becomes Impact. Strengthening the Veteran Community Through Action
For many veterans, the transition out of military service is not a single event. It is a period of adjustment that can challenge identity, stability, and direction.
Some navigate it smoothly. Others face obstacles that are harder to see from the outside.
What often determines the outcome is not just opportunity, but access to the right people, the right rooms, and the right support at the right time.
Amina Buric is a leader working to create exactly that. Her path to service began far from the United States. Originally from Bosnia, she moved to the U.S. as a child while her father served as a military attaché. By the age of 19, she had already completed a degree in biomedical engineering before choosing to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where she would later earn her citizenship.
While stationed in Hawaii, her experience quickly expanded beyond a traditional role. During the Red Hill water crisis, she was placed in a high-level operational environment supporting leadership through a complex and highly visible situation. The work involved coordinating resources, supporting displaced service members and families, and navigating a rapidly evolving crisis that affected both military and civilian communities.
It was in this environment that she developed a deeper understanding of operations, leadership, and large-scale problem solving. It also reshaped how she viewed the military itself. Not simply as service, but as one of the most sophisticated organizations in the world.
Translating that experience into the civilian space, however, proved to be a different challenge. After leaving the military, she pursued entrepreneurship, launching consulting work, continuing her education, and expanding her expertise across multiple industries. Yet, like many veterans, the transition was not just about career. It was about finding alignment, purpose, and community in a new environment.
That turning point came through connection. By engaging with local veteran organizations and business networks in Houston, she found something that is often missing after service:
A sense of belonging within a community that understands.
Today, her work is centered on strengthening that community at scale. In her role as the Executive Vice President of Operations & Strategic Partnerships for the Houston Regional Veterans Chamber of Commerce, she operates at the intersection of veterans, businesses, and civic organizations, with an emphasis on building relationships that create tangible outcomes.
Her approach is grounded in a simple but powerful idea.
The veteran community grows stronger when it is connected, not siloed.
This philosophy extends beyond veteran-only spaces. It includes bridging the gap between veteran entrepreneurs and civilian businesses, between professionals and founders, and between those who are established and those still navigating their next step.
That same approach has already translated into real-world impact.
During Fleet Week Houston, she is playing a key role in bridging the connection between the veteran community, local organizations, and military leadership to help bring Valor & Victory Fest to life.
What started as an idea became a coordinated effort across multiple groups. By leveraging her relationships within the veteran ecosystem, city partners, and Fleet Week stakeholders, she helped align the right people around a shared vision.
The result was more than just an event.
It was an environment designed to foster connection, wellness, and meaningful engagement between active-duty service members, veterans, and the Houston community.
It’s a clear example of how intentional relationship-building can turn conversations into impact.
Looking ahead, her focus remains on expanding both the reach and the depth of the veteran ecosystem. This includes increasing access to education, strengthening partnerships with organizations that support business growth, and ensuring that veterans and supporters alike can engage in ways that create long-term value.
At its core, the mission is about helping veterans continue to grow, contribute, and lead in their next chapter.
