March 22, 20268 min read

Happy Monday, Civvie!

The weather’s warming up across Houston, and you can feel it. People are getting out, reconnecting, and showing back up in the veteran community.

If you’ve been meaning to get around more veterans, this is your moment. This week leads right in to one of the biggest The Civvie Connect meetups yet (over 90 people registered to attend), happening March 25. A free, laid-back gathering designed for getting veterans back in the same room, building real relationships, and staying plugged in.

You’ll also find opportunities across business, music, and community, from the Government Sales Bootcamp to live performances from the Air Force Concert Band, plus fundraisers and golf events supporting veterans and their families.

This week’s spotlight highlights how Valor & Victory Fest came to life. A community-driven event built by veterans, for veterans, bringing together active-duty, veterans, and supporters during Fleet Week Houston for something bigger than just another event.

🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT

Where Service Meets Celebration. The Story Behind Valor & Victory Fest

Some of the most meaningful things happening in the veteran community do not begin with a formal plan. They begin with a conversation, a shared idea, and a few people willing to build something together.

That is how Valor & Victory Fest came to life.

After attending The Civvie Connect event earlier this year, Rachel Gravlee, a Navy veteran who served aboard the USS John C. Stennis, connected with other leaders in the Houston veteran community who wanted to create something special for Fleet Week Houston.

The goal was to create a setting where veterans, active-duty service members, and supporters could come together in a way that felt natural, welcoming, and genuinely enjoyable.

Rachel has been part of the Houston community since 2015. Since then, she has built strong relationships across nonprofits, civic initiatives, and veteran-serving organizations. Through her work with community leaders and groups such as Lone Star Legal Aid: Military and Veterans Unit and Houston Regional Veteran Chamber of Commerce she has developed a reputation for bringing people together and helping good ideas move from conversation to execution.

That spirit is at the center of Valor & Victory Fest, which will take place on April 19 at The Puttery in Houston during Fleet Week Houston.

The event is designed to be both engaging and meaningful, with a mix of barbecue competition and tasting, mini golf, live entertainment, keynote and wellness elements, and a veteran resource row featuring organizations serving the community.

Featured speaker: Houston Fitness Czar, Samir Becic, who will share insights on health, wellness, and maintaining performance beyond military service.

What makes the event especially important is its audience. Fleet Week Houston brings active-duty service members into Houston, many of whom will eventually face the transition into civilian life.

Valor & Victory Fest creates an opportunity for those still serving to spend time with veterans who have already made that transition, while also seeing firsthand the broader network of organizations, resources, and relationships available to them once their service ends.

It also reflects something The Civvie believes deeply. People do not get plugged into community by staying home and waiting for the right opportunity to appear. They get plugged in by showing up, meeting others, and getting in the room.

Behind the scenes, the event is also a strong example of collaboration in action. Partners including Victory for Veterans, the Houston Regional Veteran Chamber of Commerce, and others are helping make it possible, showing what can happen when organizations work together instead of separately.

More than a one-day festival, Valor & Victory Fest represents the kind of connected, community-driven veteran experience Houston needs more of. It is a place where service meets celebration, and where new relationships can lead to lasting impact.

If you are a veteran, active-duty service member, or someone who simply wants to support the military-connected community, this is an event you want to be at...
