🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT

A Seabee’s Mission to Restore Dignity. The Story Behind MobiBath

Sometimes innovation begins with a moment that refuses to leave your mind.

For Shalanda Cummings, that moment came during her nursing clinical training after serving 12 years in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in the Construction Battalion. As a Seabee, Shalanda traveled the world doing humanitarian work, helping build infrastructure in places like Lithuania and Rota, Spain, from orphanage facilities to senior housing upgrades.

Seabees are known for solving problems in tough environments. That mindset followed her into civilian life.

While working with a patient who had severe mobility limitations and a painful skin condition, Shalanda watched him break down in frustration after weeks of sponge baths because he could not safely shower.

The moment stuck with her.

Standing at the nurse’s station later, she began sketching a solution. What if there were a way for someone with mobility challenges to safely bathe without expensive bathroom renovations or dangerous transfers?

That sketch became MobiBath, a mobile bathing device designed to help people maintain independence, hygiene, and dignity at home.

The journey hasn’t been easy. Shalanda faced skepticism early on, along with personal setbacks that forced her to leave the nursing program after an accident. But like many veteran entrepreneurs, she adapted and kept moving forward.

Today, MobiBath is moving toward reality. Through partnerships with Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP) and the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, engineering students at Texas A&M College of Engineering are building the prototype, which is already over halfway complete.

Shalanda plans to place early units with healthcare and assisted living providers to gather feedback before bringing the device to market.

It’s another reminder of why showing up and plugging into the community matters. Connections often lead to conversations, and conversations can lead to innovation that helps others.

Shalanda is currently seeking partners, investors, and healthcare organizations interested in helping bring MobiBath to the people who need it most.
