What’s Happening for Houston Veterans This Week (Mar 9–15)
Happy Monday, Civvie!
There’s plenty happening across the Houston veteran community over the next couple of weeks. From meetups and entrepreneurship training to retreats, and live music, the calendar continues to fill with opportunities to connect, learn, and show up.
One to keep on your radar. The Civvie Connect returns on March 25, and this time we’ll be gathering at Giant Texas Distillery, a veteran-owned business and the largest distillery west of the Mississippi. This month’s event is also sponsored by GovClose, and Richard C. Howard, Lt Col (Ret) will be there connecting with veterans interested in learning more about opportunities in government contracting.
You’ll also find this week’s spotlight on a West Point graduate and former Army officer who stepped away from a successful corporate career to build purpose-driven workshops and retreats designed to help veterans and high performers navigate transition and reconnect with clarity and direction.

The Civvie Spotlight: Dan Dougherty - When the Corporate Climb Isn’t Enough
Sometimes the pivot doesn’t come from failure.
It comes from success that stops feeling meaningful.
Dan Dougherty graduated from West Point and spent six years in the Army. After getting out in 2018, he built a strong career in software sales, eventually rising to VP of Sales at a major HR and payroll software company. By most standards, he had made it.
But something was missing.
The structure was there. The compensation was there. The title was there.
The sense of service wasn’t.
So Dan stepped away. He took a sabbatical. He traveled. Climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Spent months in Argentina and Chile. Then life forced him into stillness after tearing his pec while training.
That pause became the inflection point.
Instead of jumping back into another executive role, Dan pivoted toward health, performance, and purpose-driven work.
Today, he leads breathwork workshops and whole health retreats focused on helping people in transition. Veterans leaving service. Executives leaving corporate roles. Individuals navigating uncertainty.
His work includes:
Corporate breathwork workshops focused on stress reduction and performance
High-impact immersive breathwork sessions inspired by modalities like Wim Hof
A monthly podcast exploring topics like veteran healing, psychedelics, spirituality, and growth
A structured retreat experience launching in Costa Rica over Memorial Day weekend
The retreats offer workshops and a curriculum designed to help participants design a vision for their life supported by values, enhanced health teams, and a supportive community.
Participants engage in yoga, breathwork, meditation, cold exposure, intentional nutrition, and guided workshops designed to create clarity that lasts beyond the weekend.
