What’s Happening for Houston Veterans This Week (Mar 2–8)
Happy Monday, Civvie!
Last week we gathered for The Civvie Connect, and the room said everything. Veterans and supporters showing up, shaking hands, sharing stories, and spending real time together. See the photo below. That’s the mission in motion.
March is moving in fast with Rodeo Armed Forces Day, veteran mixers, sporting clays, breakfast meetups, entrepreneurship training, and leadership development opportunities across Houston and beyond. If you’ve been looking for a place to plug in, there’s no shortage of options ahead.
This week’s spotlight covers the City of Houston’s new certification pathway recognizing Veteran-Owned and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses within municipal procurement. For veteran entrepreneurs, this could open meaningful doors in public contracting.
And here’s the big one. We’re partnering with Six Watch to host Saving Our Heroes (S.O.H) on April 18th in conjunction with Navy Fleet Week. It's a celebration of military service, premiering the S.O.H Docu-short, Veteran BBQ Competition, and fun activities for the entire family.

🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT
Houston Opens the Door Wider for Veteran-Owned Businesses
By Amina Buric
The City of Houston has announced a new initiative to formally recognize Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (VOSBs) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSBs) within its procurement system.
The announcement outlines a certification pathway that will allow qualifying veteran-owned firms to be identified more easily in the City’s supplier database. By doing so, Houston aims to expand access to municipal contacting opportunities for military-connected entrepreneurs.
The program will be administered through the Office of Business Opportunity, which manages supplier diversity and small business participation efforts across city departments.
Eligible businesses must provide documentation verifying veteran status, ownership percentage, and operational control. Once certified, these firms will gain increased visibility during vendor outreach and procurement solicitations.
City leaders emphasized that the initiative reflects Houston’s commitment to supporting those who have served while strengthening the local economy.
With one of the largest veteran populations in the nation, Houston continues to position itself as a city that invests in veteran entrepreneurship. The certification is expected to streamline engagement between veteran-owned firms and municipal buyers. Ultimately, the announcement signals a strategic effort to create more equitable pathways for veterans to compete and thrive in public contracting.
If you’re a veteran business owner operating in Houston, this is worth exploring.
