What’s Happening for Houston Veterans This Week (June 22-28)
Happy Monday, Civvie!
This week is all about opportunities and connections. Whether you're looking for your next career move, new relationships, business opportunities, or simply a chance to spend time with other veterans, there's something on the calendar for you.
We're especially excited for The Civvie Connect this Wednesday in Katy, our first time bringing the event to the west side of Houston. If you've been looking for an easy way to meet fellow veterans, supporters, business owners, and community leaders, this is your invitation to get in the room.
The momentum continues with the launch of Houston's first Veterans Beer Club, the Houston Veteran Job Fair, and the America 250 Celebration supporting the Whiskey Valor Foundation. Together, these events reflect what makes Houston's veteran community special. People coming together to create opportunities, build relationships, and support one another.
This week's spotlight features a Navy veteran and entrepreneur whose story is a reminder that some of the best businesses start by solving a problem. From technology and entrepreneurship to creating opportunities for veteran-owned contracting businesses by connecting them with the relationships, resources, and community they need to succeed.
If you're looking to get more connected, this is a great week to do it.

🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT
Turning Problems Into Opportunities. A Veteran Entrepreneur's Mission
When Zack Butler sees a problem, his instinct is not to wait for someone else to solve it.
It's to build something.
That mindset has guided him from a small town outside Fort Worth to the United States Navy, through the worlds of technology, entrepreneurship, and business development, and now into a growing effort to help veteran-owned businesses succeed in government contracting.
Growing up in Millsap, Texas, Zack came from a family with a long history of military service. Inspired by that legacy, he joined the Navy and eventually became a Corpsman, serving alongside Marines after completing his medical training. Following his military service, he used the GI Bill to attend Texas A&M University, earning a degree in economics and beginning a career that would take him into technology and data analytics.
After graduation, Zack worked in quantitative risk analysis before being recruited by Amazon, where he helped develop systems designed to identify fraud, money laundering, and other criminal activity within the company's marketplace. His career was interrupted by a serious motorcycle accident that left him in a coma for nearly a month and required a lengthy recovery. Rather than returning to the same path, Zack used the experience as an opportunity to pursue entrepreneurship.
Today, he leads Zebrix Group, a company focused on commercial roofing, HVAC, and specialty construction services throughout Texas. He is also involved in technology development through Blind Mice Labs and serves as a co-lead for the Houston chapter of Vets in Tech, helping veterans connect with careers and opportunities in the technology sector.
Recently, Zack identified another challenge facing veteran entrepreneurs.
After becoming certified through Texas' VetHub program, he noticed many veteran-owned businesses were struggling to understand the government contracting process and connect with potential partners. General contractors were looking for veteran-owned subcontractors, while veteran business owners were searching for guidance, resources, and opportunities. Yet there was no central place bringing those groups together.
His solution was theVeteran Contractor Collective, a growing community designed to help veteran-owned contractor businesses collaborate, share knowledge, and build relationships. What started as a simple idea has quickly grown into a network of veteran entrepreneurs working together to navigate opportunities in both state and federal contracting.
For Zack, the mission is about more than contracts and certifications.
It's about creating opportunities for veteran-owned businesses to succeed by making sure they have access to the relationships, resources, and community needed to grow.
