Advancing the Future of Healthcare. A Veteran's Mission That Continues Beyond the Uniform

For many military physicians, caring for service members ends when they leave active duty.

For Dr. Kyle Hoedebecke, it simply evolved.

From treating Soldiers in the Army to investing in healthcare companies developing breakthrough medical technologies, his career has remained focused on improving lives through innovation, leadership, and service.

Kyle was born into a military family. Both of his parents served as career Army officers, his father as a veterinarian and his mother as a dietitian, combining for more than 57 years of military service. Growing up as an Army brat, he moved frequently before eventually graduating high school in Maryland. A visit to West Point during middle school left a lasting impression, and after the events of September 11, he received his acceptance to the United States Military Academy, beginning a path that would shape the rest of his career.

After graduating from West Point in 2006, Kyle was selected as one of the few cadets each year to attend the Uniformed Services University, the nation's only military medical school. He completed his residency at Fort Bragg before serving with the 82nd Airborne Division as a flight surgeon and later as the medical director for four clinics in South Korea. During his final assignment, his team was recognized by the Army Surgeon General, earning him Physician of the Year for their exceptional patient care and leadership.

Following his transition from active duty, Kyle entered the private sector as the first medical director for Oscar Health, helping the healthcare technology company expand from a regional startup into a national organization before its successful public offering.

Today, he continues to wear multiple hats.

As Managing Partner of 1836 Ventures, a Texas-based healthcare venture capital firm, Kyle invests in companies developing innovative technologies that improve patient care while advancing the future of medicine. The firm's first fund exceeded its fundraising goal and is already preparing for its first successful exit while continuing to identify promising healthcare startups.

His work as a physician, entrepreneur, and investor was recently recognized with his selection as a 2026 Veteran Entrepreneur Award recipient by the Texas Business Hall of Fame. The honor recognizes veteran business leaders across Texas who are creating meaningful impact through innovation, leadership, and service beyond the military.

He also continues practicing medicine through Bowery Clinic, where he focuses on regenerative medicine, peptide therapies, hormone optimization, and personalized care designed to help patients improve performance, recover from injury, and maintain long-term health.

Several of the companies within 1836 Ventures' portfolio are already making a meaningful impact on the veteran community.

Harvard MedTech is using virtual reality technology to help treat PTSD, chronic pain, insomnia, depression, and anxiety. The platform has seen encouraging success within the Houston VA and offers a non-pharmaceutical approach to some of the most common health challenges veterans face.

Another portfolio company, Senseye, has developed artificial intelligence technology capable of detecting behavioral health conditions such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety through facial analysis. The technology provides clinicians with an objective screening tool that may improve diagnosis while helping track patient progress throughout treatment.

For Kyle, these innovations represent more than promising investments.

They are opportunities to improve healthcare outcomes for veterans and countless others by bringing cutting-edge technology into everyday clinical practice.

Although his uniform has changed, the mission remains remarkably familiar.
