The Civvie Spotlight: Richard Hillier — Building with Integrity After the Corps
Richard Hillier grew up in Houston and joined the U.S. Marine Corps shortly after 9/11, stepping onto the yellow footprints in January of 2002. He served more than 12 years on active duty, finishing his career as a Staff Sergeant before separating in 2013 during the post-war drawdowns.
Like many veterans, Richard did everything “by the book” on his way out — and still found himself blindsided. A promised civilian leadership role vanished after he had already sold his home and moved his family. What followed was a familiar struggle: trying to translate infantry leadership into civilian work that actually made sense.
After bouncing through a few roles, Richard landed in construction — and that’s where things clicked. He found purpose in building, staying involved with projects, and being accountable to clients. As the company he worked for grew, prices climbed, overhead ballooned, and integrity started to slip.
“I wouldn’t sell anything I wouldn’t buy myself,” Richard shared. When the work no longer aligned with his values, he stepped away and bet on himself.
Today, Richard runs Houston Precision Construction, a residential construction company focused on indoor and outdoor projects, along with handyman services for homeowners who want quality work without the runaround. His company isn’t the cheapest — and it isn’t the most expensive — but it’s built on honesty, craftsmanship, and standing behind every job.
His long-term vision is clear: build a veteran-owned and veteran-operated company that proves what many of us already know — veterans are professional, dependable, and capable of delivering top-tier results.
“I live in the community I work in,” Richard said. “My name is everything to me. You only get one.”
Richard is actively looking to connect with fellow veterans in the trades, especially electricians, plumbers, and skilled tradespeople who value quality work and collaboration.
