🌟 THE CIVVIE SPOTLIGHT
Danielle Cowdrey - An Unexpected Second Mission. A Coast Guard Veteran Builds a Technicolor Business
Danielle Cowdrey didn’t set out to become an artist. What started as a way to manage stress during a demanding season quietly turned into something much bigger. With no formal training and no long-term plan, she picked up a brush, experimented, and discovered a talent she didn’t even know she had. Today, she’s building a bold, product-driven art brand defined by color, imagination, and confidence.
Danielle comes from a deep Air Force family, was accepted to the Air Force Academy, chose a different path, and eventually enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. Her service took her far beyond what most people expect. She served on cutters, spent long stretches in Alaska’s Bering Sea, and later became a plank owner on the commissioning crew of the USCGC Bertholf, the Coast Guard’s first National Security Cutter. She also spent years supporting drug interdiction missions in Central and South America, experiences that gave her a perspective few civilians ever see.
After leaving the Coast Guard, Danielle built a serious civilian career in safety and reliability engineering, helping prevent failures in industrial environments before they happen. She eventually transitioned into independent contracting and now works remotely while maintaining full ownership of her time and priorities.
It was during this phase that her second mission quietly took shape.
Painting began as stress relief. Cheap supplies. Tutorials. Curiosity. What emerged was a distinctive technicolor style, full of surreal elements and vibrant palettes. Her work has been described as “an adult Lisa Frank,” a compliment she received during a gallery showing in London. Some of her pieces even glow under black light, an unexpected feature that perfectly matches her psychedelic aesthetic.
Danielle recently rebranded and relaunched her website, shifting from one-off originals to a more scalable, product-based model. Her art now appears on blankets, throw pillows, notebooks, mousepads, tumblers, and home goods, making it easier for people to bring color into their everyday spaces. Originals and commissions still exist, but the focus is on accessibility, momentum, and growth.
She’s also beginning to reconnect with the veteran community, something she admits didn’t come naturally at first. Like many veterans, she’s uncomfortable with performative gratitude and asking for discounts. What drew her to The Civvie was the emphasis on real connection, shared experience, and supporting veteran-owned businesses without making service transactional.
Danielle is open to collaborating with veteran organizations, nonprofits, and community events, including creating custom or patriotic-themed pieces for auctions and fundraisers that support causes she believes in.
